Sales Tax Update: Important

At Council President’s training in June, we were notified that there is a significant change in what type of fundraiser(s) would qualify for a tax-free status. This Word document provides a detailed explanation, but in a nutshell, it’s been determined that some of the catalog-type fundraisers (gift wrap, etc.) and book fairs should not be declared as tax-free sales . The reason being that PTAs do not purchase inventory nor set the price so they serve as agents not sellers, and thus not able to determine the tax status.

If you have already declared your tax-free days/events, don’t panic—at your next board meeting you can amend that. Treasurers and Ways and Means chairs, please read the This document for your reference and discuss any effect it may have on your PTA. If after reading the document, you have any questions, feel free to contact Karen Schultz at president@planopta.org or 972-248-1058 or council treasurer, Debbie Rynas, at treasurer@planopta.org or 972-731-7881.

I’d encourage all presidents and treasurers to seek training and thoroughly read the guide books as IRS and sales tax rules and issues tend to change often and also tend to get PTAs in trouble. Again, please contact Debbie or me if you have any questions or concerns about financial issues.

Thanks, Karen Schultz
